Over 250,000 miles on my original 2.8... started off in '94 when I bought the car (w/65,000 miles on it) with Pennzoil 10w30... local stores stopped carrying it and then I heard bad things about it (paraffin wax additive?? Is that true or just crap?), so I've used Valvoline 10w30 ever since.

I use Mobil 1 full synthetic. It's the heaviest weight I can find. I think it's like 20w-50 (it comes with the red cap).

Keep in mind that it's more important to change your oil and filter often than it is what oil you use. Even regular oil is fine if you don't go over 3000 mi.

If you're like me and sometimes let it slide more than 3000 mi. then synthetic oil offers better protection past 3000 mi.

No one runs any of the Castrol Oil?I run the Syntec in my 2000 2.2 S10 daily beater..and broke my motor in my Z with GTX and am trying to get around to going Syntec in that soon too. That is after 3600 break in miles..hehe.Is Castrol seen as crap or what?Fill me in.I want the best for my toys.Something I can get locally anyway..not into ordering Amsoil online (what is that all about?)..though I would like to run it in my car.

tom, from what i've heard/read the reason people say pennzoil has paraffin added to it is because the crude is parafenic, or sometihng like that. i guess crude oil has a name for differant types and differant areas. i've run peenzoil in a lot of differant engines for a lot of hours/miles with no oil related failures. actually i beleive it's as important if not more important to change your oil at regular intervals and not exceed the time or mile for changes.

Pennzoil

I ran a dirt sportsman car with nothing but pennzoil for 14 years. Never had an oil related breakdown. Ran the same motor for 3 seasons before rebuild. The engine builder said we could have reused the bearings! No sludge or other build up.

Like everyone says timely oil changes are the most important thing.

I've been running Castrol GTX 10w30 ever since my rebuild 8,000 miles ago....no problems at all. Although I think I'm going to switch to Mobil 1.

STAY AWAY FROM CASTROL... well in my opinion anyways... Castrol supposidly uses an additive in refining the oil that actually causes a slight build up over time... An elderly gentleman from my church used to be an engineer at the castrol plant in Houston, he said " I wouldn't recomend that stuff to anyone"
Personally I use Valvoline.. I broke down an engine with a buddy after 75,000 miles (for a performance rebuild) he used Valvoline synthetic ONLY, and drove the HELL out of his Z-28... when we got to the bottom of the engine, I SWEAR, every single part looked like it had JUST been installed... CLEAN CLEAN CLEAN, the rotating assembly was in SUCH good condition that we didn't even touch it, just swapped the cam/heads... SOLD ME, I've been using Valvoline synthetic for 2 years on my engine, I've never seen oil come out SO clean after 3000 miles..
For the record, I like Penzoil Also...

i use castrol gtx for dyno oil. as said before, its ALOT more important when you change your oil than what brand you use. Right now i have a astro van with 210k miles on it, used castrol gtx the whole time; no engine problems at all.

I use castrol syntex in my 99 ss; i'm not sure why but slp recommends it for some reason, from what it just has the highest flashpoint of all synthetics...but who cares? I really do not notice any more life out of this synthetic oil than dyno oil. In fact just by looking at the oil it seems ready for an oil change every 3000 miles. I think i'm just going to switch over to mobil 1 sometime just to see.

Mobil-1 makes a dyno oil too, called "drive clean". Thats the oil we use at the chevy dealership i work at. Personally i wouldnt use it, but i dont really have any basis for that.

But just pick a name brand and stick with it, i cant say it really matters. the only times i ever seen anyone actually have trouble with engine oils is when they were using the gas station 25 cent per gallon brand.

When it first came out, Syntec was 5W50 with a bunch of viscosity improver additive (a polymer - aka "plastic") that was the first thing in the oil to break down under heat and shear loads. It forms sludge when it does that. They've since come out with more "normal" viscosity ranges, and don't use so much VI improver.

There is more to oil than how long you run it. Film strength & shear strength are examples of two characteristics that affect protection from the time the stuff is poured into the engine. It could be argued that the difference in wear is very small, and on a high mileage engine doesn't make much difference. But, since I tend to heavy-foot it, I'll stick to the stuff that protects better under all conditions (it's also protected one engine for me after oil pump failure). I also don't think much of doing an oil change every month or two, especially since I'm maintaining 6 vehicles, so I'll enjoy the benefits of extended drain intervals while I'm reducing wear.

Mobil 1 here.

10W-30 in winter and I try to go a little thicker in summer, but now I don't drive the car enough to change the oil often.

I've been using M1 5-30W for a loooong time. Yeah, I buy it in the 5 quart jugs at Walmart. The engine has like 110k on it, not a single drip, and no smoke either. Stay away from Fram filters!!

Time to pay extra for AC filters from the dealer, then!! You can probably buy them online too (like carparts.com or something).

More info, read here: http://www.frankhunt.com/FRANK/corve...lterstudy.html It isn't the original website, and the letter from the Fram employee is gone, but the info is still there. I used to use Fram all the time, now I use genuine AC oil filters. If AC is unavailable, I go with Purolator.

Make sure to read the "Oil Filters Overview" at the end of the web page.

You guys should really try the Royal Purple full synthetic. That stuff is awesome. I run 10w30 in my car year round and it is competively priced with Mobil 1. I have actually replaced ALL of my car's oils (except for the trans fluid because I ALWAYS make a huge mess) with Royal Purple products. The best one was the gear lube, My posi works better than it ever has since I bought the car. Maybe, just maybe I won't have to replace it afterall. And, as a side note, most conventional oil can go more than 3000 miles with no damage to your engine at all if you change the filter every 3000 miles. Also, as far as filters go, NAPA Gold filters are awesome and less than an AC from the dealer.

Continue on with whatever oil you've been using...after all, the engine has run with it for 164K.

Nope, it will work just fine. You actually want a thicker oil in the summer, since as oil temp goes up, it thins out. Therefore, you don't want to run something thin, or it will get too thin and can potentially cause engine damage.

to be honest though, i only started useing mobil 1 recently as it was the only decent brand name i could find at the time. it was either that or esso brand oil and presidents choice oil yea i went to the superstore to get it but hey i have no complaints so far :lala: ah thanks for the info TomP that was very educational. lucky me i bought the one fram filter that contains teflon i better get that peice of crap outa my car. but realy that guy seems to find flaws with every single kind of filter. he even said AC's filter was prone to leakage on a modifyed engine, and how many people here can honestly say they have a totaly stock engine? seriously the price of an oil filter isnt all that bad, i would easily pay 20 dollars (canadian) for a perfect oil filter IF someone actualy made one. my engine isnt modifyed too much though so i guess ill run down to the dealership and take it up the *** anyway.....

one other thing i just thought of, he says he got the filters for an "early" ford V8. those filters probly contain teflon to fill in all the little craters and cracks that have developed from it being so....."early". these manufactureres will probly put anything in their products to save the life of a dieing old engine for a few more years to gain popularity. if fram was really so bad they would have been sued numerous times by now from disgruntled car enthusiasts who's engines died from teflon poisoning. i think one of u guys should do the same test for some 3rd gen filters and see if they are as bad hey come on i dont got that kind of cash so i cant do it

4 years, 6 months, and 28 days later. . .

I'm glad you are using the function, but replying to such an old post really doesn't accomplish much. Especially since this topic is beat to death often and thoroughly.

Now, if you had said you were using my favorite brand of oil, that would be different. . .
