Pulling old motor out
Pulling old motor out
Ok I got started on pulling the motor out of my IROC this weekend and was wondering if anybody had any suggestions in trying to get too the back bolts on the passenger side exhaust manifolds. I can't even see the d@mn things. Or would it be easier too just leave them on and disconnect the exhaust. Any help from past experiences will be greatly appreciated. I'm used too working on older cars and there is usually a great deal more room too work on things. I guess thats the prive you pay for beauty and speed. Thanks again in advance.

Ok, I totally feel you man... I yanked an engine last week out of an '89 RS... THE BIGGEST QUESTION OF THE YEAR... are you replacing your exhaust or reusing what you have ??? If you are replacing it, with headers (hopefully).. HACKSAW the sucker ... well if you have room to cut the pipe that is... ( My car was up on ramps so I could drop the tranny, so I had room to cut the pipes from underneath.. I replaces the entire exhaust system (headers, y-pipe, i-pipe, muffler, NO cat) if you are re-using what you have.... WD-40 the hell out of all the bolts... even if you get it all over everything else... (use PB-Buster if you can get some... It's like WD-40 with some ANTI-RUST chemical... (WEAR GLOVES) fit the socket on the bolt... because you wont be able to see the bolt, then maybe an extention... until you can fit the ratchet on all that... then get some sort or breaker bar (a 5/8 lead pipe works well)... and after a few cuss words, and some kicking the side of your car... you should be good to go... after you are done you can proudly join the ranks of those of us who FIRMLY believe that the STOCK GM exhaust manifolds were crafted by SATAN himself... If you can get to the connection to the Y-pipe... it's your best bet (4 bolts instead of 12).. but it's a tight squeeze... GOOD LUCK
Just unbolt the exhaust from the manifolds and remove the engine that way. There's plenty of room for that, even if you break off the studs for the exhaust you'll be ok because you can replace them easily once everything is out.
A decent length pipe on the end of a wrench (don't use a ratchet unless it's craftsman) and some PB Blaster (which you don't have to wear gloves for, and it's not THAT much better than WD-40) should do the trick.
