Caprice cop car shortblock ?
Caprice cop car shortblock ?
Any good ? LOL I went trough a complete teardown of one of these engines. The bearings looks VERY good in almost as new condition. The engine also has X rods which I heard are better than the plain stuff. What I'm doing is rebuilding it with new bearings and rings. That phase is already complete and now all I have to is slap my L98 heads and TPI on it. What do you guys think of these motors ? Anything special about em other then those X rods ? It was a carbed engine as far as I could tell since it had a fuel pump rod installed. It's also a full roller block.

Blade,
What year was the engine from?
It's a '93 or newer, you can trash your L98 heads since the heads on the donor engine will way outflow the L98s - by about 20%.
If it's an older engine, you still might want to check the casting numbers and get specifications - you could be surprized. You can tell a '93 or newer since it should be an LT1. ;D

Well it was a shortblock... so no heads. I know it's not an LT1 !! LOL LT1s are quite a bit different now arenth they... hehe
Anyway... Mortec.com said it's an 87-95 roller block.

Blade,
I missed the shortblock part. I guess that answers the head question. What cam are you installing? If you don't have a lot of cam, you might want to consider some slightly larger valves while the heads are just lying around. Just a thought.
One thing I found from researching 'B' cars and LT1 engines, and the problems with both is that police departments are really hard on drive trains, but they do perform routine preventive maintenance in most fleets. I'm not shocked that the case is in good condition and shows very little wear. I'll bet the transmission didn't fare so well, though.
