why is it that when i put the a/c or heat on that it only comes out of the defroster?

 

My first guess would be that the HVAC positioning controls don't have a vacuum source. Check the lines under the hood to make sure they're all connected. There should be a hard plastic (black) line coming from the firewall that connects to the lower plenum or throttle body.
