Tach Twitchin'

Only occasionally does this happen: I will be sitting at a light in drive, and the tach will start bouncing around, but the engine stays the same speed. It stops if you put it in neutral, and sometimes it will start again when you put it in gear. Any ideas what causes this?

Check the connector on the back, behind the tach. It could be loose/dirty/or both. Also you may have a short/exposed wire somewhere.

Same thing happened to me. It bothered the hell out of me. So how did I remedy it, well I pulled all the spark plug wires, and got a new set, then i tightened all my spark plugs. 2 were loose and I believe one wire was dead. Any who..... that fixed the problem and she has been running like a champ ever since.

V,

There is a possibility of interference from the ignition coil. There was a TSB regarding this from GM on some 'F' cars. /Try routing the tach wiring away from the coil as far as possible, or temporarily shield the wires wuth aluminum foil to test the theory.

I also read once where the seal in the bottom of the distributor (down by the gear) was worn and allowing oil to seep up into the distributor, and in certain situations, causing the problem you describe.
