Easy Distributor question.......

I'm confused. Do third gen's come from the factory with vaccuum adv distibutors ?? From some of the posts on this board, I'm not quite sure if the dist in my car is original or not. I have a 83 Firebird, 305,a/od, computer Q-jet, but also have a Vac adv dist. Is this a factory set up ??? If not, would any problems occur having it this way. I was under the impression that my car was stock. Any help would be appreciated......I'm used to "old" cars, not computer ones !!!

Rich,

Early ThirdGens were equipped with an HEI distributor and a vacuum advance unit. If you doubt that the distributor is original, refer to the VECI label and vacuum hose routing diagram under the hood. It should show a vacuum line routed to the distributor.

Incidentally, any car that is twenty years old could be considered "old", and those built in 1980 DID have engine control computers. You must be talking about really old cars, like I learned on, back when the PCV was considered a pollution control device, and a computer was something that occupied a room at the Pentagon to keep missles aimed at the reds...

Yes, old to me are the real muscle cars,62-70. I'm used to Hemi Chragers, 454 El Caminos and 427 Fords. I always wanted one of these type Camaros/Firebirds, just to see what all the rave was about. I like the car but my 427 Camino seems to get better gas mileage. The t-tops are great, so's handling, but at 44 yrs old that low climb into the drivers seat is startin to stretch the ole back muscles. I sold my Vet because of that. Hey, thanks for the comeback, this is a really great board, without it I would have sold the car already !!!!!
