TDC neccesary?
TDC neccesary?
Yesterday I pulled the distributor to change the pick up coil (1st time). My dad removed the gear from the shaft without marking the postion of the gear on the shaft like all the books say to do. We marked the relationship between the the distributor base and intake manifold.
Upon reassembly, everything went together ok and the gear has a pin through it basically allowing it to go on one way, I don't see a reason to mark it in the first place.
Upon reinstallation, we dropped the distributor in and the thing wouldn't get back to 100% it's original location, a few teeth off (it's about a pinky fingers width away from the original marking)
The car wasn't starting before we took the distributor out (no spark), and now it still doesn't start (no spark)......but smells like a who lot of gas.
My dad wants us to do the process of aligning the rotor to top dead center of the #1 cylinder. I have done this before when my arm slipped off a wrench and accidentally hit the fan blade on my Corvette with the distributor out therefore warranting the TDC process.
But I think that by having the distributor off by a little bit does not warrant the TDC process (it's a pain in the *** with a TPI motor with SLP 1 3/4" headers). What do you guys think?

Actually I'm a very nice guy,
GOT IT BUDDY?!?!?!?!

I just did it last week on my '72 Camaro. After I got a huge blister on my right hand I decided to pull all the plugs out.

What PITA that was!!! That was harder than turning the crankshaft.
Darn headers.Next time I'll just wear gloves.
