Ok, I am going to be putting my new heads and performer rpm intake on in a month or so. I was wondering what cam would match my setup well. I should be flowing in the 265 205 range, but dont know exact numbers since I havent done the porting yet. Those numbers are what these heads are supposed to flow if just cleaned up and trimming the valve guide boss down. I have flow numbers for them unmodified and they fow right around 240 intake and 160 exhaust with no modification(my actual heads). Anyway this is going to be with my hooker long tubes and dual 2.5" exhaust with h pipe. I want to try to step the cam up a bit to take advantage of the heads. I read in one of the threads that the cc qjet needs the vacuum to be around 13 at idle. I have no idea what it is now or what cam would have how much vacuum or even if that is the requirement for the system. I kind of like the xtreem energy cam line and I think I read that it keeps more vacuum than most other lines of cams but dont know for sure. Basically what I want to know is if I can go larger with the cam without having problems with the carb and if so what a good cam would be for these heads. This car will be driven on the street so I need the idle to be decent, but I have a 3000 stall so as long as I dont have to idle to high I should be fine. I only have 3.45 gears right now but plan on upgrading those to probably 3.73's in the future. I guess if all else failes I could get a non computer controlled carb setup, but would like to stick with the cc qjet if at all possible.

Does anyone have any ideas? I have been wanting to be able to use the CC carb, but if that wont work well with a cam that will match these heads I MAY be willing to go to a non computer carb.

Ok, I just wanted to make sure not to undercam for the heads. If this will work ok, I may stick to it though(cheaper anyway).

There's a lot of guys running the XE274 with Vortecs and your Sportsmans will flow quite a bit more than them. Just something to think about...

Yes, I know that. This is why I asked. I dont want to undercam for the heads, but i drive it daily also. I also dont know how much vacuum I will be making with what cam. I read somwhere that the computer controlled carbs require 13 inches of vacuum. Does anyone know about what cam size I am going to run into a problem with that. My xe268 doesnt seem to have a problem but I dont really want to test out a cam to find out it doesnt work and I need a new carb before I can drive it.
Thanks

I think the 274 would be fine, but it depends on what you think is streetable. Some people say a 240*+ cam is streetable, others say less than 225*. If your carb works fine now with the 268, I think it would be alright with the 274, it's only 6 more degrees of duration. If you wanted to make sure you can check how much vacumn you're pulling now and subtract a couple inches for a rough estimate of the vacumn you'll be pulling with the 274.

Ben, get rid of that qq quadrajet and dist. Get a 750 dp and a hei dist. That'll do more for you than the heads right now. You're only going to get so much power out of the xe268 anyways. Got the 383 in the 7.20s at 103 over at Havana Sat. night. I'll NEVER have another 350.

Hey, havent talked to you in a while. What are the specs on the 383 and what car did you put it in. Originally posted by cp87GTA

Also, it appears that I am going to be rebuilding the 350. I think I have a couple oil rings or something bad. It only smokes on quick revs and I have been told you dont see it while I am driving. I could possibly pick up a scat 9000 3.75 crank while I am at it. It may be a while before I get all of this done. I think that the torque converter clutch for my lock up died. I think I am probably going to be getting a t56 from my cousin to put in. I think I may do all of this at once. Pull the motor and trans and rebuild the 350 maybe as a 383 if I can afford and put it back in with the six speed. The thing is all of this is going to add up pretty quick so it may take me a while to afford it.
I dont think I am doing all that bad right now anyway. I have beat a LS1 z28 from a 40 mph roll up to about 105 when we let off. I have also run dead even with a 95ish z28 with headers catback, gears and hypertech programming from a stop up to about 105-110. I actually didnt know he was going to race so if I would have been prepared to launch I may have beaten him. Also I remind you this is all with ported 305 heads with stock valves.
As far as the holley, I have considered it. I would kind of like to stick with the quadrajet just simply for gas mileage, but if I start to get out of the cam range it will work with I may change. I need to come over again sometime and see your cars and let you see mine.
rjmcgee, do you have any idea if you will be able to get the vacuum up much, because I dont think that I will be able to work with that well and the computer carb if you cant get it much higher.
