My '86 IROC is making a weird gurgaling sound when it is under load. I don't know what detonation sounds like, but I wouldn't describe this sound as knocking or pinging, its more of a bogging sound, and if I listen closely there's a faint clicking. It only happens past 2500 revs and when going up hills. Under the distributer cap is a shiny metal box, and I don't know how to tell if my ignition is advanced too much or not. Any help is appreciated.

 

Detonation sound is hard to explain. It sorta sounds like a dozen rocks in a soup can rolling downhill very fast, but then not really. As for your ignition timing, get a timing light and check it yourself(there should be a tag under the hood that'll tell you what it should be set at), or find a reputable shop in your area
