Engine lope upon start up.

I have a plethora of problems, but here is just one of them. When I start my car, the engine lopes and chugs at 500 RPM (chug................. chug......................) before finally running correctly. If I press the gas down, the RPM's go up but it just shugs faster. (chug.. chug.. chug..) And after about a minute, it will run correctly. What could this be? When she runs, she runs hard, so I don;t think it's a fuel related problem. Any takers? Thank you.

I am a newb so someone will probably tell me I'm wrong, but the idling at 500 rpm, chugging sounds like a timing problem, but you say it runs fine after a bit. hmm, idk
