83 z-305/5spd starter
The starter in my z died last night on a quick trip to the store with my wife...did not like pushing it home...it had been going for a while....
Quick question...will I need to drop the y-pipe to replace the starter...it was too dark last night to see, and I MUST get it runnung tonight...I wanted to see how many beers I might need to pickup on the way home...
Thanks
Jim

I have read many times that you have to drop the Y-pipe but I never have, I have changed a few starters on these cars and have never had to, there is a way you can manipulate the starter as to be able to remove it without dropping the pipe, it's hard to explain but it's possible. I think most people just save time and agrivation by dropping the pipe and make it easier on themselves but I'm into pain and agrivation.

You shouldnt have to. The original starter on my L69 took a poo a while back and I didnt have to drop the y-pipe. I have since added the bigger style (high-torque) starter and now I have to drop the y-pipe if I want to pull the starter out. Not even a big deal anyway.
