Can I bypass the heater valve??
Daz,
Yup. ThirdGens didn't even HAVE a hot water valve until 1987. The HVAC system has air damper doors to bypass the heater core with cool vent air, so the water valve is somewhat redundant. You should be fine with a flush 'T' or hose mending nipple temporarily installed there.
