identify 305

can anyone identify this 305 engine for me?

numbers are 460778 a K is lower and to the right of the numbers and then a 22 further to the right.

I am trying to see if I can swap it for the one in my 86 T/A 305 LG4 5 speed. or should I just find a 350 in the junk yard and rebuild it?

Check the casting numbers at www.mortec.com for details.

That one is a generic 1970's 305 smogger engine. The last time I compared prices, cast iron was going for about 3½¢ a pound, so if it has both heads it's probably worth about $13.00 (U.S.).

Just my opinion, but if you have to do anything to the engine below the deck, it's not worth spending a penny on a 305 - unless you're stuck in a 5-liter racing class or something odd like that. Even then, a different bore/stroke is better than what the factory provided.

Well the deal is the 305 in my 86 T/a is about had it, a few years back a freind totaled his nova with a newly rebuilt 305 less than 6k. He gave me the engine so I am thinking of swaping the two.

1) is it worth it?
2) will everything match up to the older block "like the temp senders"

Only problem would be the flex plate ('86 has one-piece rear main seal), and dip stick (assuming the older block has it on the driver's side).

You'd probably be better off taking the $13 and putting it to better use, though.

Bigger is better in this case. Why spend the money on a 305 when a 350 will cost about the same, and you'd get more out of it?
