code 33

its been coming up every once in awhile since i bought the car but its been constant lately. a few days ago i pulled out of the driveway and the light came on and i lost some power. it still seemed to run fine if i kept on the gas but i would pull over and shut it off and then it would be fine for awhile. only seemed to do it the first couple of miles then after it warmed up never had any problems. then it started getting worse the next day. when the light would come on it would backfire and blew my muffler right off. this happened on my way home from work too. i came home and checked the wires for everything and it stopped running that way. since then everytime i come to a stop it stalls. only way to stay running is put it in neutral and keep it around 2000 rpm but it even sounds sick kinda like its missing very badly. still runs fine and sounds fine when i am driving its just at stops now. any suggestions? thanks.

Code 33 is a MAF code, so I'm assuming your car is 89 and older. What engine do you have in the car? Can you tell us if you have the bosch MAF or the Delco MAF sensor? It sounds to me like the sensor is bad, so when you get back with the info, I can give you some details on diagnosing it in reference to my fuel injection book here.

Cool... you've got the 'easy' one haha. On that MAF, there should be a yellow wire connected to it. This is the signal wire. Connect a frequency counter to the signal wire (ignition ON), and check it. If the reading is greater than 160Hz, then replace the MAF sensor. If it's less than that, the problem that set the code is no longer there, however the most likely repair will be a MAF sensor. Be sure to clear the computer codes before attempting this, and then run the engine until the code sets again. Hope that helps you out.
