Roller lifter longevity ?

I just wondered what info anyone could give me on the life expectancy of the factory roller lifters in a motor that's basically stock ?
Also when a lifter goes bad or wears out, what are the first indications of failure or what visible signs should I be looking for?
Thanks

other than running with no oil maybe longer than forever. lot of other parts will wear out first.
