Gas{burp} Problem!Help Me!!

While replacing my electric fuel pump on my 91 RS 305 TBI, I decided to disconnect my exhaust from where the cat ends all the way to the rear of the car. Im currently driving the car like this so it's a lot louder than it was before now that it has no muffler. My question is that I started noticing a gasoline smell when I'm driving only ,and it's stronger when I really step on the gas pedal and on the freeway. Could the car be running rich because I removed the muffler and the pipe leading to the cat? If I put the windows up while driving I don't get that gas smell, so it's not coming from inside. Anyone have an idea what's going on?

Are you certain it is a gasoline (raw) odor or a sulfur odor?

naw it's gas...i took off my exhuast just to understand a little more how it was set up, and see how i could possibly make it dual. i left the pipes past the cat off for a day or so, and smelled gas strong every time the car was on. the noise got annoying though, so i put the muffler back on, and the noise and smell went away
