Need advice on engine rebuild!

I have an 88 GTA with a 350 TPI motor. It has 110,000 miles on it. I don't think the previous owners took all that great care of it. I had to replace a head gasket and it was pretty gunked up in there. It runs kind of rough sometimes, but it's never let me down. What are reasons people rebuild engines? I have a few other cars that I could drive while I'm doing this. I'd like to rebuild my engine for performance too, like adding a cam. Nothing crazy where it would idle like crap, but something a little milder than the stock cam. What other things should I replace while I have the engine out? Do the pistons need to be replaced, or can I just replace the rings? How about the bearings? When I have the engine out of my car, about how long does it take to do a rebuild if you have all the parts? Thanks for any info or advice! Matt

i'm not sure you really meant to say what you did, wouldn't just a bit more cam than stock make more sense? you'd rebuild an engine when it lost compression or oil preasure usually. lot of people do to just freshen it up. last 2 engines i did both came from cars that had sit for 20 plus years. you'd only have to replace the parts that were worn, so maybe you're pistons would be ok. most likely i'd just take it +.030 and buy a set of stock replacement pistons replace the bearings nd rings cam and springs, get the heads done, change oil pump and you should be all set.
