need help quick just put starter in and...

just put a new high torque starter in my car. its made by cvr high performance. when i put it in the teeth look like they mesh good. but when i start the car it has the high pitched tgone like a high torque starter but when the bendix is supposed to release from the fly wheel it sounds like its catching. so.. i shimmed the starter and it sounds the same, what gives?? this starter is also i guess considered a mini starter also. do i need more shims? how can u tell? please please please any help at all would be great thanks

Probably needs more shims. Try adding them and see what happens.

I have one of those too, it's great. I can't believe I was so stupid and put up with the inadequate weenie stock POS and a car that would hardly start for all these years.

u have the exact same starter? hwo many shims do u think i will need? the starter only came with 2 so where do i get more at? do the local parts store carry them? thanks

Yeah, I have that starter too! I really like it. I have it on a 400, which of course didn't come with the late-model starter bolt pattern that you have to have to use with the T-5 bell housing, so I drilled my block. I purposely erred in the direction of moving the starter drive slighty closer to the crank, because I didn't know at the time whether this block had "The Problem" or not. (Turns out it doesn't) Mine is not very representative of what a properly-equipped block would have, therefore. It takes about ¼" of shims.

You can get packs of them in the Help! product line at the parts stores that have that, or ask for them at the counter. They come in 1/64", 1/32", and 1/16" increments usually. Try sticking a 1/16" in there and see what happens; if it's better but still needs more, add more; stop when it works right. Not very scientific unfortunately!

ok i will add more hopefully soon then someone told me it could be a cracked block and i sure as heck hope it isnt that..

hookin- i think you would know already if you had a cracked block... you would be losin fluids and such...
