when my starter went out I had headers and a y-pipe also. I had a big starter and i couldnt take off my y-pipe b/c it was welded. so i took the starter apart while still on the car. It was like two bolts that held the starter together. I replaced the old one with a new mini starter. I didnt have to take it apart to put it in b/c its soo small. Hope this helps.
