cam/intake question

OK i plan on replacing my cam in my 85 Z28 that has stock heads.
My question is this, what size would be best suited for a slightly modded 305? I have shorty headers on it, and i want a real lopey idle that sounds killer

duration@0.50"
intake-254*

exhaust-264*

lift

intake-.533"

exhaust-.555"

lobe seperation-114*

will this work on my system or do i have to go smaller?

Also does it matter what type of intake you use?

That is WAY too big for a mostly stock 305, and probably way too big for most highly modifed 350s or 383s. Usually its better to err on the conservative side when it comes to cams. Givin that your engine is almost stock; Id say get a stock LT1 cam, and that might even be too big. Call CompCams, they can give a better recommendation than anyone on this board... As far as the intake, the stock-style long runner setup is probably the best intake to use on a 305.

It will have a rough lopey idle. But it will not work well in a near stock 305. it will have no power below 5000 rpm.
It will not make your car fast.
Way too big.
Bad choice.

what about from 184* up to 214* will that be better suited for
my setup?

i have a 350 cam, not sure from what engine and i dont like the way it sounds.

I'm not a real 305 expert, but from looking at those Summit brand cams, I think the 2 you should consider are the 204/214 dur @.050 and the 214/224 dur @.050
The 214/224 still seems a little big though, so I think the 204/214 should be plenty.

Now, I may be wrong on this one but I think the stock cam out of your car (which is not a HO 305) has the following specs :
194/204 duration @.050
.401/.403 lift with 1.5's

However on this 204/214 cam, it probably won't give you the sound you said you were looking to get. You might have to bump it up to the next highest cam, however it could hurt performance a bit. And also, you'll have to upgrade your valvetrain on your stock heads.

so i will need new springs? The cam comes with the lifters. Man and i thought this would be an easy mod

Ok well i can prolly go with 206/206 then but they are from comp cams.

Yeah, I'm not too sure about how much lift your stock springs will handle. But taking into consideration that they are probably 18 years old, it wouldn't be a bad idea to change them, especially since you're swapping cams. Did you look at the Comp Cams with 212/212 dur @ .050? This seems like it would be a pretty good compromise with what you're trying to achieve.

kool thanx for the help, i appreciate it. But do i need a stall converter? I dont think i have one. coz on the guide it says from 206-220 you need a stall converter. Also will i need to get new pushrods and rocker arms as well?

If you go with the 206 or the 212 dur. cam, your stock converter should be fine. You can keep your stock pushrods and rockers but I would recommend some aftermarket rocker arms (preferably roller, although they cost much more). Stock Chevy rocker arms are notorious for being very inaccurate. They are suppose to be a 1.5 ratio. But I've heard of many being as little as 1.35!! Remember that if you get 1.6's, this will also bump up the lift on the cam. So you have to take this into account when deciding what springs to buy.
