I found a very streetable comp cam solid lift cam with a powerband of 1500-5500 rpms and what I was wondering is what are the pro's and con's of these type of cams. Oh and how would it compare to say a comp cam XE268 cam.

 

I've had a couple. They're OK. They're made more for upper RPM engines.

From what you say about it being "streetable" means it isn't worth the hassle. The XE268 will, IMHO, make you much happier.

 

Ive had a couple SNS solid cams. One was very mild like the one you describe, has a very nasty idle even though its rated with a fairly low power band a high stall converter is a must with an auto. Some solid cams pull some you cant tell any difference betwen it and a standard hyd it just depends which you get.

Yes, it will have more throttle responce then the XE268.

 

Solid lifters are more precise in their action. You can get by with less valve spring pressure with them. These attributes allow you to rev higher, but like the others say above, you don't reap many benefits if the cam is mild, anyway. You can play with lash to "tune" a little (altitude effects, for instance). But, on the street, again - no real benefit. Lower spring pressure may increase longevity, but that's negligible with cared-for engines going 200k these days.

You'd be adding more maintenance and noise. The noise can be an issue if you have a knock sensor.

I've got my eyes on a Comp solid for the 396. But, that is only a "street car" so I can get to the track (no trailer, and I like the idea of a streetable race car). I'm looking at the benefits of higher revs and increased longevity.
