How is the oil level?

Oil pressure?

Can you isolate the noise to a particular side of the engine?

Is it louder at the top or bottom (oil pan)?

Does the noise vary directly with engine RPM? Does it occur only at a specific RPM range?

Is the sound temperature-dependent?

Lots of questions, I know, but answers will help isolate the possibilities better.

could also be an exhaust leak, grab a long screw driver or a prybar and search for the sound, put the top of the prybar/screw driver on various suspect areas of the engine while its running while putting the handle end to your ear and see if you can isolate exactly where the sound is coming from.
