Tick tick goes the engine

After the engine has been off for a while and then started back up there is a ticking noise that can be head inside the car and out. It gets louder under acceleration and then eventually goes away and doesnt reoccur until shut off again. What could this be? Exhaust leak or something else?

oil starvation, whats the pressure at? my v6 did the same thing,a good fix is to run a can or 2 of liquid wrench through the motor ,let it run for about 15-20 minutes, then change the oil,it removes all the gummy deposits and sludge.

It could be an exhaust leak. My brothers 89 Iroc did the same thing. Found out that one of the nuts came off the exhaust manifold where it meets the y-pipe. He would start it and the ticking noise could be heard. After a few minutes when the pipes had gotten hot and the metal expanded, the noise was gone.

Hope that helps.

yep its probably oil havin trouble makin its way up the pushrods.. its almost always caused by poor maintanence (oil not changed often enough) you probably a good amount of sludge buildup inside the engine.. the liquid wrench method is new to me but sounds believeable... more common is running a quart of atf with 4 quarts of oil to clean everything out and then drain and refill with clean oil and a new filter.
