Found a hole in my new block!!! Fixable?

I can't believe this. I am trying to put the final touches on my new engine (and first engine build) when I spot this hole in the block near the oil filter near the rear of the block. I have no idea how this hole was created or how long it has been there. It looks like it exposes the water jacket. Does anyone know a way to fix this hole WITHOUT disassembling the engine? I have no idea how to fix an iron block like this. I probably bought the engine block 3 years ago from PAW so returning it is out of the question. I REALLY don't want to take this engine apart.

Hole in Block

Thanks,

Glen

Drill it out tap it and put a plug in it (read a bolt). It doesn't look to be in anything important.

hard to tell anything from your pics, but if it's what i think it is, or that i'm looking at the right place it looks like a casting flaw that is harmless. if you do waht to repair it clean it up with a wire brush and then brake clean and use some jb weld on it.

ede, That is exactly what I was thinking about doing. I wasn't sure if this was part of the water jacket or not. I guess it doesn't matter since the solution would be the same.

Cronic3rd, I don't think there is enough material to drill and tap. It is in an awkward spot.

I'll try the JB weld.

Thanks,

Glen

That looks like the back side (front side?) of the blind hole that is drilled in the rear flange for the transmission locating dowel. On older SBCs, that hole used to be drilled straight through, exposed on both ends.

It probably isn't hurting anything, but you can putty it closed and paint it if you want.

I probably should have taken some closer pics. The hole in the block was definitely knocked in. It is not a machined hole. The piece that got knocked in is still sitting in the hole. I'll take it out, sand around the area, JB weld in the hole, and paint to match.

Thanks,

Glen
