Honest Emissions Question

I've been told that here in Connecticut I can fail the test. I have to go to a mechanic and then bring the receipt to prove that he worked on the car back for the 2nd test. If I fail again I pay a $150 fine and I'm out the door with a 'Fail' sticker. This sounds too good to be true?

I have a couple of buddies who would give me some fake documents to show the flunkies at the test center if need be. And in my opinion $150 every two years is well worth the ability to run the most radical cam possible and make GOBS more power.

Who has experience with failing emissions?

I know I should call the local test station or something but knowing that they produce revenue unjustly for the state I would be leary of them having caller ID and them somehow finding out that the car is like a year late (been down for the swap, then I blew the engine).

New York has something similar. If you can show/prove that a "professional licensed mechanic" tried to fix the cause of your failure, then you are good for a year. It's just too expensive at $400 per year. Anyway, check Connecticut's DMV website, The NY DMV website explains the process all in detail.

Mass. has the same thing going on. I heard that mass. is like 3rd or 4th in the nation now for emissions, after CA and NY I believe. They have the same deal in MA where if you fail, you have to attempt to repair or resolve the problem. What I did, is in MA, they can fail you for not being stock, so I just put in a much tamer cam for the inspection, then I changed it back out again right after. My engine isn't a 305 which is what the 89 RS came with, but all I had to do with that was put an "emissions" device over the tag on the block. I don't think that they actually looked that hard, but hey you never know. I'm sure that you could call up the DMV and ask, it seems a little paranoid to think that the DMV is going to be out chasing all of the hot rodders in CT, I mean where are they all gonna hot rod to? The state is only so big! Just kidding.
I do know a lot of people though that know a mechanic and will go in there and just keep paying the $150, but it seems a lot cheaper to change out the cam for the inspection, and then to slip in the new one. In my car, I can work on the cam with the motor in. I don't know about firebirds or the slightly newer camaros though...
