882 head casting

i have a chance to get a set of these heads for about 100 bucks just wanting to know if its worth they will be on a 383

What are your other options? Because the 882s are just run of the mill smoggers that basically don't flow for ****. Kinda cappin a 383 I would think.

yea looks like the 882 realy suck seeing as how the out flow L98 heads. i wouldn't use them on a 383 but the look like they can feed 400 hp 350 with lots of air. most people think that 441, 882 and 993 suck realy ther a pretty good/cheap alturintave to other GM castings other than vortecs and 292 heads.

The 882 heads flow ok,but they are one of the lightest casted heads GM every built.They are prone to crack around the exhaust seats when exposed to high tempartures.These heads are basicly junk and I would not recommend for any high performance motor.

If you can push a welding rod through both the center exhaust ports and out the head risor crossover hole then the castings are very thin. The better 882's (if you can find them) only have one exhaust port going to the crossover. Better smog castings are 992, 993 and 997's. 997's are a good heavy casting to use. They can be cleaned up and make good performers with some larger valves and port work for a set of 76cc heads. Targetmaster 350's have 997's on them.

And while you've got that welding rod stuck in there (nickel rod, of course), connect it to your Hobart and start filling the voids so that you can get down to some serious port enlargement. When you're done, the numbers cast in the rocker valley really won't mean much aside from chamber size.
