Missing at cruising speeds
I have a strange problem with a miss. It only happens at lower RPM and while cruising. Under acceleration it doesn't show up. It's very strange because it only happens maybe once a week and only lasts a second or two. I'm thinking its electrical because the Tach bounces when it happens. I replaced the cap and rotor and put on new wires but that didn't help. Could it be a carb problem? I've run out of ideas on how to fix it and it never acts up when I take it to the dealer. Any advise would be very appreciated, thanks.
Troy,
Those intermittent problems can be difficult to diagnose. It's also possible that the pickup coil, reluctor, or HEI amplifier module is failing. You could also have a coil, EST, or primary wiring problem. Check all electrical connections to the distributor. Meter the coil primary and secondary resistance, and check the pickup coil resistance.
It is possible that you have a mixture porblem, but a wildly jumping tach is more indicative of an electrical/ignition problem.
