windows/doors rattle

Hey, just have a quick question. My windows are rattling, rather loudly, when I drive in town and I can put a little pressure on the window with my hand and it will quit. Is this normal? how can I stop it if its not. Also, whenever I crank up my car or am just driving, the drivers side door is rattling, sounds like metal on metal. Any suggestions on what it might be is appreciated.

it's somewhat normal. remove the door panel and you will see two metal "brackets" with felt on the ends mounted to the very top edge of the door with 10mm head bolts. these are the window guides and probably need replaced. these are what make the two vertical scratches to the window or tint that you see so often. I would replace these and adjust them so that they barely hold the window against the outer weatherstrip on the door. if your weatherstrip is dry and cracked, it might be a good time to replace it as well because the added pressure could scratch the glass.

Something else it could be (it happened to me) is the metal channel that runs vertically near the mirror has a bad or missing rubber guide. When mine was doing it, my window used toscrape like hell and rattle real bad when closing the door with the window partially open. The way I discovered it was missing was that I took the panel off the passenger side door and that rubber guide was still in place. I put 2+2 together and figured that when I had my window motor replaced, they took that out, for whatever reason, and never put it back. Instead of buying a new guide and fighting it to put it in (it's stapled on to the metal channel) I got some "pile type" adhesive weather stripping and put that in the channel instead. Took care of the problem - no rattles or squueks since...
