removing ignition cylinder
removing ignition cylinder
I've got the dreaded worn ignition cylinder problem with VATS in my 91 Firebird. Since I can't seem to get a straight answer on how to bypass the VATS (I've got the correct resistors, just can't find the wires), I guess I'm going to have to pull the ignition cylinder and manually trace out the wires. I know I need the lockplate compressor tool and torx bit (already have both from working on my S10s) that damn near all GM vehicles need, any other special tools or tips I should know about? Or are people going to be as tight lipped about that as well, since I'll be dealing with anti-theft "features"?
Like it or not, the Administrators of this site decided several years ago that there would be no discussions with information about bypassing the VATS system on the message boards. There are plenty of other sites with some of that information, and PM or email can be used to find the rest of what you need.
However, removing an ignition lock cylinder is an entirely different matter. You already have the luxury of a lock plate depressor, so you've probably used it at least once. You realize that you'll have to deal with the lock ring that holds that plate in place, so lock ring pliers or a couple of small screwdrivers will be helpful there.
Your '91 probably also has an inflatable restraint, which will present another obstacle. The firing coil for the system needs to be removed, then re-centered when it is installed. It would really be best to have a manual with those directions. And you must disconnect the battery to disarm the system so that the air bag doesn't "dis-arm" you when you are removing it.
Once you're past the air bag and lock plate, the rest it really straightforward, nothing unusual. Just remove the lock cylinder retaining screw, key buzzer wiring connector, and VATS connector, then remove the lock cylinder.

I apologize for coming off like a jackass, I'm sure I sounded like it from the post, its just that I'm already being driven crazy by that system and I've only owned the car for a few days :-P And I feel that its my right to decide what features I want or don't want on MY car. Its not like I'm on here saying that I want to get around the VATS to screw with my buddy, or to take my dad's GTA for a joyride... Besides which, it don't take but 20 seconds for a guy with a set of spoons to take off with your car regardless of what anti-theft features might be installed.

Well, the only reason I still have my '89IROC, is because of VAT's...it's obviously not foolproof, but keeps the less experienced thieves at bay.
