Running hot+ STRONG gas smell

I think as in a previous topic that I stated that my water pump bearing is wearing out. Well I believe the bearing has give out. My tempature gauge reached 220, which I thought the fan was supposed to kick on. The tempature rose to 240, which I then shut down. Glad I was in my driveway just practicing, I woulda freaked on the road. Could my water pump bearing going bad have an effect on it getting that hot?

Also, after I shut her down in the building, I noticed a VERY STRONG gas smell, smells like it was coming from the car. We have gas in the building, but it just seems that it was coming from car. Is this bad? It smelled like you sniffed gas from a gas pump.

Were did you smell gas? Inside the car, outside, front, back? Could be just an exhaust leak, or running a little rich.

a good way to just check the water pump functionality, is to squeeze the upper radiator hose(be careful though because its hot!) while the car is running and as soon as you go to release it, you should feel a surge of coolant running through it...if you don't the water pump may be shot...you should try it as the car is warming up though so you dont get burnt

Hmmm, I can't see well in the building its in, I'll have to get it out, hay bailer is in the way.

Anyway, bad news. There is no coolant flowing. So water pump is shot? This sucks.

Also my idle isn't steady anymore, its usually about 750-800 something like that, well now its jumping to about 600-1000+. Something is wrong, can I check for codes just to be sure, and I need to learn how so how do you do it with a paper clip?

Try it the old way, if it makes you tear up real quick your running real rich.

^Anyone else remember that?

I also wouldn't rev the **** out of the motor with a bad w/p. Damage may result that you do not anticipate.
