Rpm's Jump at stoplight.
Rpm's Jump at stoplight.
Ive had this problem twice now in the last few weeks. It has only happened in the morning when its cold outside, however the car is warmed up. Ill be sitting at a stoplight, or going at a very slow speed (5mph) and the rpms will jump from 500 to about 1000-1200 and the car feels like its gonna jump out from underneath me. It will do this once or twice, and then the rpm's will stay at that 1000 and the "service engine soon" light will come on. Any advice? Does it just need a tune up? Is it just acting up because its cold?

Well, you need the error code from the computer, which the the SES light is telling you about.
Go here for information on pulling the code:

Remember, as that link tells you, turn the key to "on" but don't start the motor. The "on" position is right before "crank".
Let us know what code(s) you get, besides the #12 code. Throughout the years, different cars meant different code descriptions, we can figure that out for you. Personally, I'm guessing at 33 or 34...

Just wondering, Will it give me an error code even though it only says "service engine soon"? I will see if i can check it later though and see what i get. Any ideas on what it might be though in the meantime?
