could tachometer be off??

I have a 1990 RS 5.0 TBI. My RPMs are significantly higher than a few years ago, seems if they have kept creeping up and up over the last 2 years. I was wondering if over time my tachometer could become off? Cruisin down the highway at 65mph and it states that the engine is turning over at 3700. I used to be able to have them under 2K at 65mph.

N E ideas?

Factory tachs are not know for there accuracy. Also have you changed the rear gear in the car?

Yes the factory tachs can go bad. I had to replace the one in my 91 rs. It would idle at about 2500 rpms. I used it as a excuse to get a 140 mph instrument panel from a 91 z28. Went right in and my tach is now reading properly and I got the 140 mph speedo.
