Please help,question about rebuilding a 350
This is my first time building a 5.7 350. Anyways, I was looking through this site (Chevy High Performance)and there was an article on how to build your first 350.... and it mentioned to install a press-in plug in the hole adjacent to the No. 5 main cap.
here is the quote
"Don't forget to check to see if the small, press-in plug is installed in the hole adjacent to the No. 5 main cap. If this is left out, the engine will experience low oil pressure and completely bypass the oil filter. Also install the plug in the deck surface on the driver side at the rear. If you forget this plug, it cannot be installed with the head on the block. "
when I was tearing down the block I noticed this hole was not plugged, and my question is, is this nessasary?, pros cons with this in or out? Just wondering if any of you know about this, recommend it? Have done this? I am building the engine for the street and is going to be daily driven. I am ready to torque down the crank now, and I'd rather do this now if I have to, rather than after its all built and in the car.

Put the plug in.
It goes about an inch and a half down in the hole, not right at the surface. If you look down in there with a flashlight or something, you'll see a hole coming in from the side toward the oil filter, and a sort of shoulder just beyond that; the plug goes just past the shoulder.
Follow the oil passages. Oil comes from the pump, up through the cap, into that hole in the block, then off to the side through the hole I just mentioned to the filter; then it comes back in from the filter from the side, into the vertical passage again, but this time just above the plug, then up toward the top, then over to the rear cam bearing journal. If that plug is missing, the dirty oil from the pump will go straight up the vertical passage, and will not flow through the filter.
Pros: it belongs there.
Cons: none I know of.
