84 Hard starting

As it is a twenty year old car, I would expect it to be hard starting when it's first fired up in the morning. After it does start, I have to hold the gas until it stays running. What are some of the things that I can do to help this problem? I'm getting ready for a tune up in the next week, new plugs, wires, sensors (O2), ect. What else could cause it to do that? THis is my first carb. vehicle that I have worked on so anything would help.
