ECM differences for V6/V8?
ECM differences for V6/V8?
Is there any difference between the ECMs used for a '84 Firebird with V6 and that with a V8? I would think they'd be the same except for the PROM, but I'm not sure. Can anyone clue me in on this?
Thanks...

That and they've got different wiring harnesses.

94 Firebird Formula M6- No options but Z rated tires. No mods over $10. 13.5@105.
79 Malibu "beater" w/junkyard 400 SBC, tweaked QJet 4bbl, finally a decent set of heads, a few other tricks. A maddening 13.000001 @ 108 on the motor with little traction. No nitrous runs with the new heads yet.
Grandma's old 78 Malibu (33K miles!) soon to have the powertrain from the 79 put in it.

The 82-84 ECM's used a different connector for the harness than 85-up units. 82-84 was a "card-edge", 85-up was a regular pin connector.

Wouldn't there be a part # on the ECM? On a big sticker? I've always wondered this myself; it seems that the wiring diagrams (at least for the '86 models V6 vs V8) are very similar to the computer.
The PROM-Burning guys might know! (Let us know too!

There are computers that are used in GM 4 cylinder, V6 and V8 cars that have the same part number for the computer but different PROMs, but I can't remember what the part number is to save my life and what years they are.
ahhh, found it! I was thinking about the 90-92 computers to be used on a 90-92 TPI motor. Here it is even though it's not the year you are looking for but if they did it in 90-92 maybe they did the same thing in previous years.
GM P/N 01227730 from any 90-92 MULTI-PORT 4,6 or 8cyl. Cars. They are found in the Corsica's, Berreta's, Calais's, Cavalier
Z-24's and so on.....and of course the Camaro/Firebird but the others are in case you can't find a f-body to yank the computer from.
