Cylinder honing?

I rebuilt my motor about 3000 miles ago and i put in total seal gapless rings. But the walls looked good so i did not hone them. Not even thinking about breaking the glaze the rings did not seat and it burns quite a bit of oil.. My question is if i take them out and do a hone job just enough to break the glaze would the rings that are in there seat properly or do I have to do new rings again. Thanks.

Well, since you obviously cannot measure gap and wear, you have no real idea of their condition. If you get them removed, inspect the profile of the rings to see if any of the original chamfer is left. The oil rails might be your best wear indicator.

If the rings appear to be in good condition and have tension, use them again. You might also consider using a really low-grade mineral oil to help the rings seat, like Quaker State or Pennzoil. Actually, a non-detergent, single viscosity like a 10W or 15W might help them seat it you take it through the normal ring seating procedure again.

If you've already done that, you'll probably need to get the bottle brush out...

i suspose you could and i know you'd want to save a few dollars, but i don't think i'd even consider reusing any rings, bearings, or seals. since you thought the holes looked good i'd guess you used a calibrated eye to do your clearance checks with too. the lack of honeing may not be the problem, or only a part of the problem.
