code 54 gone, gremlin still lives on!
Here's what I'm working with. 88 Formula, Lo3, Tbi, EST Ign. Only Mod's are 3" cat back and smaller air filter lid to create open elem. 4* adv. on Init. timing. The problem: car starts, warms up, run's like crazy, can't hold it back. But, when you get where your going (10 mi. or a hundred) and shut it off (for 5min or five hours) and start it again, it goes to fast idle slows down, surges, and dies! and that leaves me 2 opptions: continue to restart it 2-4 times untill it finally stay's running or, when I start it the second time, push the pedal down about 3/4 and let everyone within ear shot hear it sputter miss and rev up 2500 rpm untill it smothes out (about 5-10 sec) and then it idle's ok. In both cases after restart the performance is down like there is no Ign. adv. going on. the bottom end power is good till about 3000 rpm and the nothing. Might as well be in neutral. seems to be getting worse lately. as I write this I've realized I recently switched to 87 Oc. gas from Prem. and could be agrivating the problem. I'm going to switch back to prem. and see if it will improve a little. It might be a knock sen. spark cont. sys. problem, but I still don't get any codes. any help with idea's on what to look for will help I hope . I've allready done all the basic checks and everything look's Ok or has been replaced. Thanks !

My car did something like that last winter. I decided to start the car after leaving it in the garage for 5 weeks then hell started. When it got hot the engine did like your engine does, it did this all winter . I think i had moisture in the distributor or water in the gasoline. It was gone when spring arrived and the snow was gone. So remove the distributor cap and have a look. When the engine get hot the water turn into steam. I guess your problem only appear when the engine is hot.

Nope! opened it up and it's clean and dry. I noticed your a trucker! I am too. I run the eastern U.S. about 2500 mi. -3000 a week. I only drive the car on weekends if I do, and don't spend a lot of my time off working on the car. So, this has been a long time problem that won't seem to show it's self like a man! I think the car was built by a woman!!
