Worth the money??? I'm from Canada and have never seen a car without one. I use Mobil 1 oil and don't plug in until it goes below -20C. All the block heater does is heats the coolent which will keep the engine warm. The car will start easier with a warmer engine. It's less wear and tear on all the internal parts as well as the starter and battery.

The oil will still be reasonably cold but will gather some heat that's transfered by the oil pan.
