Starting problem

I'm new here so i hope this is the right place to post this. When I try to start my firebird(1988, 305 TBI, 700R4, 121k, stock) the elctrical system cuts out(all lights go out including gauges, starter doesn't crank, solenoid doesn't engage), however the car is fine once the key is back to the RUN position. The problem has just started last night and has only happened twice so far, most of the time it starts with no problems. My guess is that it could be a short somewhere near the starter but I'm not sure. Also, the key is getting much harder to turn, I've read they column lock eventually goes out so should I have this replaced right away. Any help will be appreciated.

For some reason the car has been fine for the past couple of days. However, I am gonna get the switch replaced soon before I get stranded somewhere. Thanks for your help
