Rough Idle/Car Dies
Rough Idle/Car Dies
My 89' RS 305 TBI occasionally dies at idle or at a couple thousand rpms after initially accelerating. While idling, the idle speed varies about 100-200 rpms every 3-5 seconds. On the low side its at about 550 rpms, and it feels like its about to die (sometimes it does). I recently replaced the fuel filter, and I tried adjusting the timing to no avail (yes, I disconnected the wire). I would appreciate any ideas you guys might have.
Thanx alot,
Will

Check your cap and rotor. If you see no sign of wear or a broken rotor, check your spark plugs. If you see no sign of fouling or serious corrosion, check your spark plug wires. Look along the block (especially at the back of the exhaust manifolds) and look for black or white dusty marks on the engine block or manifolds.
After all of this, check your injectors.
Good luck

Was wondering about it too. My car does this when it's cold. The idle speed goes up to 1500 then back to 500 then back to 1400 or so for quite a while until it's hot. Then it run's pretty fine. I am gonna put in some new plugs and oil anyway because the car has stood for the last 4 years before I bought it.
