Fuel Pump

Tried this question on the carb board, but no response.

If I switch to carb, from tbi, I have a 92 RS that was TBI now carbed, and I remove the ECM w/ Chip will the fuel pump continue as if nothing has changed? Or would I have to rewire it?

Presently the ecm is in, w/ the chip tho very few of the sensors are connected.

Thanks, in advance.

never done it but i think your fuel pump would continue to work. i don't think it's tied into the ecm.

oh yeah one more thing youll also need a fuel pump regulator because your stock in tank fuel pump puts out somwhere around 30psi when all you need is around 7-9psi for a carburater

Thank you for the response. I appreciate it.

Already have the mallory regulator installed now, running at 6.5 psi. It was the easier road to travel so far. I haven't removed the harness yet, just the sensor wires and plugs that I knew i would not be using with a carb. Did you remove your harness as well?? Could that be why the fuel pump didn't work? I've gotten two different answers now about this. One is yes the ecm can be removed, and it doesn't affect the pump. You say it does, there must be a common thread here.

yes i removed my wiring harness and i had to rewire the fuel pump why dont you just switch it over to mechanical fuel pump it only cost around thirty dollars at the most for the pump the fuel plate and hoses do you still have the oil sending unit hooked up i believe theres 3 wires on the oil sending unit and one of them goes to the wiring harness to control when the fuel pump comes on and goes off. if you had a haynes book or something like that for your camaro you can see what im talking about. i just did it to my 92 rs so i know i ripped out the whole wire harness and every wire in it you can always find out which wire it is that runs the fuel pump and leave just that one wire or take that one wire and hook it up to your fuse box to come on when you crank your car

True I could switch to a mechanical fuel pump, and probably will when I do swap motors. But for now, I'm going to keep the regulator. But however I'm going to pull the ECM and chip and sell them. Might get back some of the cost of the conversion. BTW I did a mileage test yesterday. Oklahoma City to Ft Smith, and return. Primarily highway driving going, 218 miles, 8.1 gals came to 26.9 mpg. On the return I did some city driving along with a lot heavier traffic. Distance 208 miles, 8.8 gals w/ 23.6 mpg. Total trip distance 426 avg speed 75 or as close I could keep it to that. Average mileage both legs 25.2 w/o cruise control. So there, neener neener.. Almost as good as with the tbi I replaced. It was 27.2 mpg average.

Well, the fuel pump is tied into the computer, but it only runs it for 2 seconds when you first turn the ignition on. From there, the computer forgets the pump, and the pump is turned on by oil pressure.

So very true, removed the ECM this morning, car starts just fine, and the pump is working just fine too. No rewiring done whatsoever.
