Throwing Flames From Exhaust..

I was talkin to a bunch of guys in the shop at school the other day, and the teacher was sayin how they get the cars to shoot flames (like gone in 60 secs and stuff). And he said all they do is take a crappy like toyota coil or something, and drill a hole in your exhaust, thread in a general spark plug and wire it to the coil, and when u turn on the coil, the spark plug will ignite the left over fuel in the exhaust if it's running rich enough, and shoot flames. I have a straight pipe, so that would be a peice of cake to drill a hole, and the exhaust is pretty much free flowing, so nothing to burn up, and i've got a 700 mech holley on a 305 (350 blew), so I know it's running rich, so do you guys think this would work or what?? I think that would be sweet as anything to have my car really define "FIRE"bird. I'd have to figure out what the easiest way would be to set up a coil to do that, but what do you guys think about that setup? Thanks.

They did this on the TNN show TRUCKS and set it up the same way you said it was pretty cool.

this is just one example of what you will find when searching through the exhaust section. give it a shot and you should find anything you need on this topic.

would you be able to put the spark plug where my straight pipe is (where stock cat would be), or is that too far back and it has to be right at about the tips?? Just wondering.

You want it like a 1/2 foot from the end of the tips so you don't throw flames through the whole cat-back or in your case off road pipe back. I heard sending unburned gas through the engine is not to good and kills all internal lubrication.
