Cruise control broken

My cruise control isn't working on the 89 Iroc so I looked around under the hood and found a black spherical vacuum reseroir under the driver side fender that was busted. Is this why it's not working?

Oh and when I saw that the ball was busted I unhooked the vacuum hose from it and hooked it straight to the cruise control unit. I did this because I thought that busted ball would be a vacuum leak and suck dirt into my engine. Is that right?

Now the idle hunts up and down sometimes because of the LT1 cam. Could the vacuum leak have given me a better idle? because it didn't seem to hunt as much before.

I dont have all your answers but this is a start. That ball is the vacuum canister and helps keep vacuum when the engine isnt producing as much a might be needed. You have to have it. I got one for my car from an 86 Regal when mine was wrecked. They are mostly the same through out the GM cars. I might not be exactly right on its function but I do know it is a part of the cars vacuum system and tied in to the cruise conrol and you have to have it!

Vacuum leak will certainly cause a weird idle. I know that when you remove a vacuum line the idle will go up. because it is getting more air causing a lean condition.

I also know that when my vacuum line fell off my EGR unit, my cruise quit working.

Here's what I would guess.

You have a vacuum leak, so your cruise doesn't work. Vacuum might likely be your culprit

A Vacuum leak can definetaly contribute to the hunting idle.

Most vacuum hoses go to some pretty important sensors, that the computer relys on to keep your car running right.

My suggestion to you is to replace the broken things that the vacuum lines go into, then check and replace hoses as needed for sure.

Check your idle after all that is done.

Then after your hoses are all connected and in the right place, try to tune for a good idle.

That's my best guess.

The black "ball" is the vacuum resivior for the Cruise controll and the cruise won't work if it is broken, it is there to give the cruise control a stable vacuum source to operate (it acts as an accumuliator, lessening the effects of momentary changes in engine vacuum).

Replace the "ball" and hook up the lines properly and see if the idle behaves then
