If your knock sensor grounds out, the cpu wont receive the signal from it and it will not advance your timing. You will have base timing.

ok. thank you
now if i disconnect the est where should my timing be for some reason it is showing up towards the drivers side of the crank pully. far enough over that it won't read on the timing tab it shows up to the drivers side of it.

is it possible that the distibuter could be 1 tooth off?
i though the distributer could only be off by 180deg due to the blade that sits inside the bottem of the distributer gear on the distributer?.

The blade on the bottom of the distributor shaft just drives the oil pump. Sometimes you have to turn it to get the distributor in right. The timing mark to the drivers side of the crank indicates a slight retardation of the timing but with the est wire disconnected it cant be the knock sensor. Hows your car running? If it was off a tooth it wouldnt run very good and if it was off 180 youll get a lot of backfires when you try to start it. You might want to try turning your dist cap to try and advance your timing a little.

car seems to run fine until cl;osed loop operation.
at which point the idle drops and the car will die unlesss foot slightly on gas. runs as though theres a cam. then dies

no there are no vacume leaks. checked checked and rechecked

i'm now lost don't know what it could be repaired knock sensor circuit still runs the same timing not moving still reading to tye drivers side of timing tab. i will try to turncap but it locks in place with 2 screws would have to twist dist.

also car gets alot of pinging when at wot. and shifting gears.
i would think that i need to turn timing down not up. correct me if i'm wrong

The cap does not turn, the WHOLE distributor does.

Under the distributor there is a bolt that holds down the distributor, loosen this, and the distributor should turn freely, and you can adjust your timing. I recomend only turning the dist when the car is running, preventing you from turning it too far and not allowing your car to start.

My 350 does the same thing with the timing, either the knock sensor is bad, or im picking up false knock.
