Hate to provide bad news but it could be a spun rod bearing. If the noise increases with engine speed, this is likely the problem. How many miles do you have on the engine? If you know a mechanic have him listen to the noise. You could also drain the engine oil and look for a bearing material (a silver looking metal) in the bottom of the drain pan. Also you can pour the oil from the oil filter and look for the same silver residue.

If you have a engine bearing problem you have to remove the crankshaft from the engine to fix it, which means you have to remove the engine from the car as well. If you want to keep the car, sounds like its time for an engine rebuilt.
