383

Here in a couple of weeks im pulling the 305 I think Ill replace it with a 383 the motor will cost about 4500. it will have scat crank eagle I rods TRw pistons dart iron Eagle heads Stage 3 ported by cfm performance Lpe 211 219 hydralic roller cam.
I figure about 415-425 HP. I will only be shifting at 5500 THe car has stock rear end with a manual 5spd What kind of 1/4 mile times will I see If its not in the 105-110 mile range I dont want it. What kind of HP would an engine have to make at the crank to take me 110 in the 1/4 only shiffting at 5500
Thanks

if your stroking a 350... unless your strictly racing, i wouldnt go that high, but maby im wrong. that long a stroke is made to make power lower in the rpm range. anyways, with 400hp, if the rest of the drivetrain is set up to handle it, then you should be seeing some solid 12's, but thats just my 2c

Thanks for the reply your probably right 5K rpm might be a better I was going to go with the hot cam and Afr heads. I dropped down a little in duration because I Dont want to spin it fast. I decided to go with the Stage 3 Ported Iron eagles (200) because man ive got a problem with stripping aluminum. will my iron eagles preform as well as the AFRs. Please somebody tell me if im doing something wrong Im ordering parts next week. If there is a better motor to build or buy throw some thoughts at me. Ive got about 5000 to work with and I want to end up with 110 in the quarter.

Hey I have the same set up, except I have an Accel SuperRam and a Vortech S-trim. Your horsepower expectation is a bit to high. With that Cam you could wind it up to 6000 with no problem. You should be about mid to low 13's at 105 or 106. Good luck tring to get traction. My best 60' is 1.92.

AustinT - The combo you mentioned could do 110 as long as everything else is "matched" - Intake, runners, T/B, exhaust, torque converter, gears, etc.

Scat crank and Eagle rods in a 383 could go 7,000 rpm if you wanted. I've got a 406 with 5.7" Eagles I shift at 7100 in the SS. You could run stock rods with ARP bolts and push 6500 plus. So,,, 5500 is NO problem.

I will use a carb. If my expectaions of HP are a little high what is a more appropriate figure. If I ran the Hot cam what kind of power would I make. WIth the hot cam be OK with power brakes. I just figured I needed to keep a good low end I cruse 90 at 2300 RPM
Should I just say screw the 383 and order a fastburn 385 then swap in the hot cam and roller rockers? what kind of 1/4 times could i expect with the zz430
Thanks for all of the replies

AustinT - With regards to the engine producing the power to get you to 110mph in the 1/4 you should be able to do it with the engine that you described - I am doing it with less engine than you - see my sig.

I also agree with what BadSS has said. You will need a good exhaust, and good gears. BTW what exhaust will you be running and what rear end gear ratio do you plan on going with. How tall are your tires? The stock rear end may not be able to to handle too many hard launches.

With regards to being concerned about running a hot cam - there is a solution. I run an electric vacuum pump. I did not have enough vacuum to operate the brakes. The electric vacuum pump will set you back about US$290 (includes shipping and tax) - if you are interested I could send you information on this.

Bottom line is that the engine alone will not get you to 110, you need the rest of the mods.

Austin T - I am running 26"X10.5 Mickey Thompson Sportmsan tires (also have 26X10 ET Drag which I have not tried them with the 9" Currie). I used to run the 3.73 ratio with the Auburn carrier in the stock rear end (and now running 3.70 in 9").

At 109.9 mph (with 3.73 ratio and 26" tires) I would cross the finish line at just over 5200 rpm. The little 355 likes to rev - I shift it @ 6500 but have experimented up to 7200 and found it best at 6500.

My cam specs @ 0.050" are as follows:
249I/256E

I have no experience with the newer transmissions (just Muncies) but I doubt whether the T5 transmission will be able to handle the punishment your 383 will deliver. You chances of breaking your stock rear end are high if you have good traction. There was always this fear that I would break my rearend if I added slicks. Late this year I added the 9" Detroit Locker with 35 splines axles and now I have my slicks.

I know that it gets very expensive to add a strong transmission and rear end so if you don't want to do that (right now) and still have some fun, don't add real sticky tires and don't launch at high rpms. With the torque your 383 will have you will not need to do that until you take care of the rear end and get stickies.
