RPM decrease/increase while driving

I noticed today while driving my 92 RS the rpm would decrease[sputter] when i came to a complete stop - It woul decrease so much that each time I stopped it died on me so I had to restart it every time - So far I was able to keep it from dying on me riding the brakes a little - Can some one give me a clue of why this is happening and how to fix it please.

I was thinking that my ac compressor may have something to do with it - I noticed that it turns on and off frequently at times and that causes the rpm to increase slightly. That only happens when the ac is on though and I still dont know why it would do the same thing when the ac is off - so I have the rpm increase while driving and rpm decrease when stopping causing the car to shut off

Engine: A slow one & a fast one
Transmission: A bad one & a good one
Axle/Gears: A weak one & a chained one
Multiple potential causes here.

What's your engine? Auto or manual? What year?

If it's EFI....I'd guess either a clogged fuel filter, or a sluggish/sticky IAC valve. Does the car seem down on power lately? Any check engine lights?

IAC valve is very easy to clean. If the valve is just sticking, cleaning should fix it. But if the motor itself has become sluggish, you'll need to replace it. Although I can't tell you a test to see if it IS the motor failing. The IAC valve is in the side of the throttle body...little cylinder sticking out with an electrical connector...probably held in by 2 Torx screws. Unplug it, take the screws out, and slowly remove the valve. Be careful to keep the o-ring that comes out with it, you'll need that.

Clean the valve with a good rag and some carb or throttle body cleaner. If it's real bad, use carb cleaner. But avoid getting that into your intake...much of it anyways. Carb cleaner screws up fuel injected cars. Use throttle body cleaner for the passages that the valve sits in..after it's all clean reinstall it. Reset your computer then by either removing the ECM fuse (passenger-side fender, in a little plastic covering), or by disconnecting the negative battery cable for something like 30 seconds. Fair warning, most likely, the car will stall when you start it again for the first time..and it might stink like gas a little. This is just the car 'tweaking' the IAC valve to find out of it's open or closed.

It is an auto 92 camaro rs 305 efi

Thanks for the tip - I went ahead and checked the codes and came up with a bad coolant temperature sensor so I replaced that and so far it seems ok - I still need to check some other things though...
