fuel pump and leaking fuel tank

I just spent $600 to have my fuel pump and gas tank replaced. After 128,000 miles, the fuel pump just died with no warning. I brought it to the shop and when they took it apart, the fuel tank was cracked at the filler neck. The fuel tank is in a really bad place. My exhaust was completely welded(dual cats), so they had to cut it off, and the most of the rear suspension had to be removed. 4 hours of labor.

$130 pump
$140 tank
$220 labor
$50 exhaust repair
plus tax and environmental charges

I've heard that cracking fuel tanks is a common problem. Did GM ever recall this, or was there a secret TSB about it? It seems to be a safety issue. The thing was probably leaking for years and I didn't know it. Not a good thing since the muffler is right underneath.

There was a svc bul on the 92 filler neck, you might as well call the local dealer see if your car was included in that and if it was repaired. The phone call is free.
