Help me on a Cavalier
Help me on a Cavalier
So here's the deal, my roommate's Cavalier (89 with a 2.0 vin 1 distributorless) leaked coolant at the front drivers side corner. I replaced the gasket no problem. Now the reassembly is gettting me. Mitchell says to give the valves 1.5 turns after 0 lash. No problem right? Well the adjusting nuts stop turning just short of 1.5 turns. My teacher says that the valves are net lash and just get tightened down. I think he is right but what about you guys? Also he says the head bolts are torque/angle in a blind hole but I believe that the are standard bolts in a wet hole. Mitchell gives me straight up torque specs, one for the long and one for the shorts(I forgot what they were). What do you think? Help me out here guys, my roommate needs a car. Thanks

I've had A LOT of problems with the head gasket on a 2.0 cavalier. hayne's said to torque the bolts to some value (i forget, can look it up if you want/need it) and then turn each bolt an additional 90 degrees (a shop mechanic backed this one up). As for the valves i just took them off and put them back on per hayne's. didn't have any problems wiht the valve train but the thing keeps overheating even after a new ratiator and stuff, guess i'll do the waterpump again!?
hope i helped at least a little

What did Haynes say? Do they even make Haynes books for these cars? I've never seen them.

Chiltons says, Rocker arms get 11-18 Ft. Lbs. There are no other instructions so I presume that no other preliminary lash adjustment is required. Just tighten the nut till the desired torque is achieved.
head bolts,
VIn code (K) 18 ft. lbs. then 3 turns of 60* each then 30-50* after warm-up.
Vin code (M) same as above
vin code (1) short bolts 62-70 ft. lbs. long bolts 73-83 ft. lbs.
Vin code (W) 70 ft. lbs.
the vin code is the eighth didgit in the VIN #.
