depends on the test and what you have or haven't done as well as the condition of the tune up and overall preformance of the engine

The last time I took my Black Berlinetta in for the emissions test ( before it was wrecked!) I preped it first. The car was a 305ci V8 automatic. I wanted to get the car tested BEFORE I did all the work to re-install the smog system. I had completely removed the smog system ( manifold tubes, smog pump, AIR system, ect) because the "visual" test was not required here in RI.

1)I burned 2 full tanks of Ultra 94 octane
2) Put a bottle of fuel system cleaner in the tank on second fill up.
3) Sprayed 1/4 can of carb cleaner thru the carb while cleaning it with a brush
4) Changed the plugs ( needed it anyway. )

The car passed the state emissions test with flying colors. The total time involved with prepping the car this way for the test was 1-2 hours. I will add that the cat converter on the car was in good shape as well as rest of the exhaust system. ( the AIR tube was plugged with a screw !) MANY shops around here will fail a car with bad pipes on it !!

Good luck !
